Osu   (pronounce it..'Oos')

This is possibly the single most used word in the Dojo.  Used as an acknowledgement  or motivator - it gets students to USE their voice - to shout! It helps to generate a strong spirit in the club. Also to highlight a technique or point in competition, and importantly, to generate physical power - from breathing out whilst exerting, and inner power from correct breathing from the diaphram. Literally, it means to push, or to endure 'ones self'.

Said with a bow on entering and leaving the dojo.

On  receiving any instruction or advice from the instructor.

When bowing at the start and finish of the class.

When bowing to your partner during kumite.

As 'Thanks', as an affirmation, and as the Kiai.

Sensei ni, Rei Bow to Teacher (with a loud Osu)
Senpai ni, Rei Bow to Senior
Otagai ni, Rei Bow to each other
Domo arigato gozaimashita Thank you very much
